Interest in divorce peaks in January

On Behalf of | Jan 8, 2020 | Divorce

When you spend years married to a person, there never seems to be a right time for a divorce. After building a family together, you may worry about how a separation will affect your children. And you don’t want to fight in court over multiple assets.

However, many people find that getting through the holiday season is the final strain in their relationship. January is often called “Divorce Month” due to the increased interest in divorce by struggling spouses. For many couples, the beginning of the year can mean the end of their marriage.

January is a peak month for divorces

Throughout December and January, internet searches for divorce information increase. Google reports that searches for “divorce” usually peak in the second week of January. And many attorneys also report seeing a rise in filings.

Holidays can give couples a push towards divorce

When people are no longer happy in their marriages, going through the holidays can be the push for change they need. Research from the University of Washington found that the stress of dealing with family and celebrations can push apart couples who already have problems. They look to the holidays as the last chance to save their marriage. But once December ends, many look for a way out.

A new year can let you examine your life

Filing for divorce can be one of the most significant events in your life. The holidays may not have pushed you to make a decision. But like many people, you may choose to use the beginning of the year as a good time for you to start examining your relationship.
